Learn how to start and maintain a springtail culture.

Springtails are small soil-dwelling Collembola that feed on fungi and decomposing organic material. Although often grouped with insects, they are a distinct group of tiny six-legged animals. In a suitable bioactive enclosure, they help recycle nutrients and manage small patches of mold.

A dependable bioactive companion

Temperate springtails are a practical addition to planted terrariums, moist bioactive enclosures, and isopod cultures. Their small size allows them to work through the substrate and leaf-litter layer, supporting the cleanup community alongside other microfauna.

Preferred environment

Provide consistently moist habitat, gentle air exchange, and stable room-temperature conditions. Keep cultures away from direct sun and heat sources, and avoid allowing the culture base to dry out. For setup, feeding, and introducing them to an enclosure, read our Temperate Springtail Care Guide.

Behavior & benefits

  • Graze on fungi and decomposing organic material.
  • Contribute to nutrient cycling in the substrate.
  • Complement isopods in a bioactive cleanup crew.
  • Provide a reserve population when maintained as a separate culture.

Springtails support enclosure maintenance, but they do not replace spot cleaning, airflow, or moisture control and cannot guarantee a mold-free enclosure.

Raised at Moore & More Bugs

Our springtail cultures are maintained on charcoal or substrate bases with balanced moisture and controlled feeding. Cultures are supplied established and ready to introduce to a suitable enclosure.

What you’ll receive

  • 1 culture: one temperate springtail culture.
  • 2 cultures: two temperate springtail cultures.
  • A charcoal or substrate culture base for introduction and continued culturing.

Population size and life stages vary naturally. This listing is for temperate springtails, rather than our Yellow/Lilac mixed culture.
