Temperate Springtail Care Guide

This guide covers basic care for the temperate springtail cultures sold by Moore & More Bugs. Springtails belong to Collembola; the listing does not identify a species, so this guide avoids species-specific breeding promises.

Keep the culture moist

Maintain a damp charcoal or substrate base. Check regularly for drying and replenish moisture as needed, using dechlorinated or distilled water. For soil cultures, keep the substrate moist without turning it into a flooded slurry. Moisture needs depend on the container and airflow.

Temperature and airflow

Keep the culture in a stable room-temperature location, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Do not assume the warmer conditions used for Yellow/Lilac cultures are necessary for temperate springtails.

Use a secure lid with gentle air exchange. Too much ventilation can dry the culture; too little can allow stale conditions. If using an unvented culture container, briefly open it during regular care to refresh the air.

Feed lightly

Offer a small amount of springtail food or yeast. Check consumption before adding more; a young culture needs less food than a dense one. Remove excessive uneaten food rather than allowing a large buildup.

Seeding an enclosure

Introduce some springtails and culture material into a moist, sheltered part of the enclosure. Keep a separate reserve culture for future additions. A bioactive enclosure still needs appropriate moisture, routine spot cleaning, and monitoring; springtails cannot prevent every mold outbreak.

Starting a springtail culture: first steps

  1. Prepare a secure container and a moist culture base suited to the springtails you bought.
  2. Keep the new culture away from direct sunlight and heat.
  3. Begin with a small amount of food and check how quickly it is consumed before adding more.
  4. Keep part of the population as a reserve when seeding an enclosure.

Common questions

Why is the culture drying out?

Check the lid, airflow and location. Adjust moisture and ventilation together; do not compensate for excessive drying by repeatedly flooding soil.

Can I use these instructions for every springtail?

No. Springtails differ in care requirements. This guide covers the store’s temperate culture; check the product description for other cultures.
