Panda King Isopod Care Guide

Panda King isopods (Cubaris sp. “Panda King”) are best enjoyed as a dedicated colony. Their pale bands and dark markings make them distinctive, although they often stay beneath cover. A stable enclosure matters more than frequent handling.

Enclosure and substrate

Use a secure, lidded container with small ventilation openings. It should retain moisture while allowing fresh air; do not seal it airtight. Provide several inches of moisture-retentive substrate containing decomposed hardwood and leaf material. Cover the surface with hardwood leaf litter and add cork bark or other shelters.

Temperature and moisture

A practical starting temperature is 72–78°F (22–26°C). Keep the enclosure away from direct sunlight, heat vents, and sudden temperature changes.

Maintain humid conditions and consistently moist substrate, without puddles or waterlogging. Keep a mossy area damp and provide a slightly less moist retreat, rather than letting a large area become completely dry. Check the substrate regularly and add water according to how quickly your setup dries.

Published keeper recommendations for air humidity vary. Use substrate moisture, airflow, and colony condition together when adjusting the enclosure; a humidity reading alone does not describe the whole habitat.

Food and calcium

Keep decomposing hardwood leaves and soft, decaying hardwood available as staple foods. Offer small supplemental portions of vegetables and occasional protein, such as an appropriate isopod food or fish flakes. Keep a calcium source, such as cuttlebone, available.

Remove uneaten supplemental food within a day or two. Feed lightly while a starter colony establishes; excess food can encourage mold and pests.

Settling in and growing a colony

Panda Kings can be shy after arrival. Give them shelter and time to settle, and avoid repeatedly digging through the substrate to count them. Stable conditions and patience support colony growth; breeding speed varies, so there is no fixed timetable for babies.

Bioactive use

A dedicated colony is the main use we recommend. Panda Kings can also contribute to leaf-litter breakdown in a suitably moist bioactive enclosure. Provide cover and account for predation by the resident animal. Establish a separate colony first so you have a reserve population; they should not be relied on as the only cleanup crew.
